A Leadership Talk with Dr. Shon Neyland, Retired Airforce Colonel, Non-Profit CEO, and Sr. Pastor at Highland Christian Center (HCC), Portland, Oregon.

Where Will Leadership Be 6 Months From Now?

Leadership sometimes can be a relative term because many people see it differently. However, there are norms associated with the word – In 6 months, we may be looking for those we’ve nominated and voted for to provide answers they may not have.

Within eighteen months, the entire world turned inside out and upside down – Without warning! America is ripe for a miracle, and people everywhere need a break – Especially where leadership is concerned. Some should re-visit their leadership style, while others do not lead in the first place. While leadership in the United States runs scared, it’s difficult to project six months from now, but we must plan on some level if we are to survive; And a little kindness from those in power might help? It will depend on leaders we’ve voted for and put into office – Before, during, and after COVID-19.

A new dispensation means something has changed either in how and what we do differently. With that comes uncertainty, yet a fantastic opportunity for citizens to stand up and be leaders in their business, community, home, and school. Over the next six months, many would experience unprecedented growth – With many leaders under pressure, it may be a good time to differentiate between leadership styles and management – Leadership outreach and unity, unlocked during a worldwide pandemic.

Leadership opportunities and outreach to the youth of this generation who are ready to take their power, making commitments to themselves to lead if elected officials refuse to stand. It was the best. This week’s Chosen Visionary in HOT-Seat NUmber 70 was born to lead, has the credentials to prove it, and is coming to The Urban Academics Roundtable to share his experience and wisdom learned through various leadership roles.

“Leadership! Failure to lead, Failure to organize, Failure to galvanize! This is what leaders do. We speak out, we organize, we influence; We make it happen. We don’t have that now, but I believe that there’s a new day coming in America, and we must stand together (Unity).”

Leadership and Colonel in the US Airforce are Synonymous

Dr. Neyland is a Retired Colonel in the US Airforce. It’s challenging to attain this military rank; Leaders only should apply.

Climbing the ranks starts from the captain, major, lieutenant colonel (middle field grade), and finally to colonel, the most senior field grade military officer rank directly below the rank of brigadier general. You do not get to this level without impeccable leadership skills, evident to higher-ranking US Military officers.

Becoming a Colonel is NOT an Easy Task

There are no shortcuts in the US Military – Everything meticulously calculated, disciplined and structured – Combined with developmental training, Dr. Neyland is a product of this environment. He rose in leadership as a high-ranking officer. Traditionally, colonels have a minimum of twenty-two years of service and at least three years of service as a lieutenant colonel before being promoted. Colonel – selects will also complete additional training to be enabled.

Dr. Neyland enlisted in the military in 1984 as a Logistic Management Specialist. He was
commissioned as an officer in 1991. Upon commissioning, Dr. Neyland served as a Nuclear Missile Launch Operator and in Space Operations. Dr. Neyland was licensed into the ministry in 1988, ordained in 1990 with the Church of God in Christ, and became an Air Force Chaplain in 1999. He has pastored several large congregations and at one time was the Senior Pastor of the largest worship service in the Air Force with over 5,000 in attendance weekly – With Signs & Wonders Following Him.

Before coming to Highland Christian Center, Dr. Neyland served 20 years as a Senior Pastor in a variety of capacities in the Air Force, including Command Chaplain for Pacific Air Forces, Command Chaplain for Air Force Materiel Command, Deputy Commandant for the Chaplain Corps College, and as Chaplain Corps Deputy Chief of Plans and Programs in the Pentagon.

Leadership is a journey and not a sprint – Dr. Neyland has proven this time and time again. Here in this video, hear his heart and passion for the country and its lack of leadership in county unity. My question is whether there is a lack of leadership or a shift in leadership happening as we speak? Take a listen and decide for yourself (10 minutes):
