The Single Most Important Thing You Need To Know About HALLOWEEN 2021 is we’ve got you covered for ALL of your favorite and original looks for this star-studded holiday, with you in the center!
What is Halloween Anyway?
Halloween is a celebration the night of October 31, the eve of the Western Christian’s All Saints’ Day, commonly celebrated by children and adults who dress in costume and go door-to-door asking for bags of candy. Children especially get a pass to take for themselves as much sugar and sweet stuff as they can, with no argument from parents nor teachers.
That’s the simple and United States truth about Halloween, but here are some other facts that will help you decipher the phenomenon:
The name we observe now, Halloween, has originally spelled Hallowe’en – A mesh between All Hallows Eve, the day before All Hallows Day. Today people are more familiar with and refer to it as All Saints Day, a Catholic holiday commemorating Christian saints and martyrs. You may not find any Halloween Decorations at the home of most Christians, but they are many times passing out candy to children.
Some folks (even historians) agree that the celebration came from a particular day celebrated by the Ancient Druids, educated or priestly class of the Celtic religion.
The Christian Position on Halloween
The word Halloween or Hallowe’en dates back to about 1745 and is of definitely Christian origin. Christianity and the church, in general, have changed drastically over time. As we’ve seen during the COVID-19 Pandemic, ever-changing evolved into Bed Side Baptist (Home) for many devout Christians, who see no reason to return to traditional church practices.
The word “Hallowe’en” means “Saints’ Evening.” It comes from a Scottish term for All Hallows’ Eve (the evening before All Hallows’ Day). There are several ways they spell this.
The Bible, as far as I know, does not mention Halloween. However, the Bible does say the following: “There must never be anyone among you who . . . consults ghosts or spirits, or calls up the dead.” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12) While some view Halloween as harmless fun, the Bible indicates that some of its practices are not.
Historically, its roots are pagan, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that if Christians “celebrate” Halloween, they are pagans. Christians are attempting to live a life void of pagan practices, something challenging to do in the US, where every other month is a significant Holiday costing money to participate. Dressing up with friends or handing out candy on Halloween is NOT a sin on October 31st – Unless, of course, it’s a sin on any other day.
Is Halloween a National Holiday?
The argument is as old as the event (no holiday) itself. For some, the thought around how many people celebrate and observe the October 31st date and how much money (over 73 billion dollars annually) s, it should be a National Holiday.
Well, let us think about it for a moment – If Halloween were a National Holiday, how would children all over the world wear their beautiful, gory, and outrageous costumes throughout school and work hallways? It may not be as much fun to parade around your neighborhood. You might miss someone’s potential to go viral if the right camera picked them up at the right time.
On the flip side of this argument, it’s true capitalists understand how much money consumers spend between Thanksgiving and Christmas than any other time of year. However, third to Mother’s & Valentine’s Day is no doubt Halloween. Some argue because of this; if folks were allowed the day off, they could spend even more money on the scariest day of the year. The Single Most Important Thing You Need To Know About HALLOWEEN 2021
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) released recommendations for Halloween 2021; Here’s a quote from their website:
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is encouraging people to stay away from most of the fun activities connected to Halloween. Its recommendation? No trick-or-treating, no costume masks, no indoor costume parties or haunted houses. The health agency says those are all high-risk activities.”
Center For Disease Control
It is important to know, but even more so to remember the truth about COVID-19 and its new Variant. The above quote, for those who celebrate Halloween by attending parties, but I know black, brown, and poor folks who will have a hard time complying with the recommendation. Sometimes I wonder why they bother with statements like this; If they don’t want young people to congregate in crowds, they should have closed the country.
It’s hard enough for most of us to follow new mandates. So, my recommendation is if you want to attend a party this year and cannot help but to attend, like high-schoolers and college students, please remember the skills you’ve learned over the last year and a half. Stay socially distanced (6-feet away) from folks knowingly or unbeknownst with a COVID-19 diagnosis. Another thing to be mindful of those who are A-Sympotamic, yet have been diagnosed with the deadly virus. Also, wearing a mask is a great idea regardless of whether you are vaccinated or not. Here are some festive for Halloween. Enjoy!
