Black American Engineering Scholarship Award ($40k) Due January 15, 2021
If you are African American – Black student in the United States and are comfortable with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM); Here’s an awesome opportunity. According to the Helping Project, Black American’s only account for about 7% of STEM programs and 9% of all engineering degrees awarded. This scholarship opportunity levels the playing field is vitally important—especially since diverse teams are 21% more likely to outperform industry profitability.
This annually renewable and flexible scholarship of up to $10,000 (up to four years) provides Black Americans pursuing careers in engineering a path towards success. Selected candidates receive substantial financial assistance that can be used for school expenses including tuition, books, fees, room, and board. The Black American Engineering Scholarship Award recipients also participate in an exceptional mentorship program designed to support their professional success.

Architech’s Foundation ($20,000) – Diversity Advancement Scholarship – Due January 15, 2021
If you are a minority and an engineering student, this multi-year scholarship, up to $20,000, can change your life! The Diversity Advancement Scholarship was designed to help more minority students pursue a successful career in architecture. Multiple scholarships are available.
Minority students with imagination and design skills will influence the built environment and the architecture profession.
Who is Eligible
a high school student planning to enroll in a NAAB-accredited architecture degree program;
a rising second-year college student in a NAAB-accredited architecture degree program; or,
a technical school or community college student who has completed high school or its equivalent and intends to transfer to a NAAB-accredited architecture program
NAAB-accredited degree programs may be a five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree or a four-year pre-professional bachelor degree followed by a Master of Architecture degree. Scholarships may be renewed for up to 5 years (up to a $20,000 total award—multiple scholarships are available).
The Diversity Advancement Scholarship was created in 1970 with an initial grant from the Ford Foundation after civil rights leader Whitney Young Jr. challenged architects in 1968 to create a more responsible and equitable field. Read the program report here.
Center For Alcohol Policy has $5k Scholarships; National Essay Contest, Due January 8, 2021
The Center For Alcohol Policy (5K) National Essay Contest is accepting entries for its 13th Annual Essay Contest. This national academic event is intended to foster debate, analysis, and examination of state alcohol regulation in the 21st Century. Each year, students and professionals are encouraged to participate in this significant effort to bring attention to state alcohol regulation, its complexities, and many successes. Guidelines and Rules for This National Essay Content
WHO CAN ENTER:
The essay contest is open to all over the age of 18 as of December 2020. Students, academics, practicing attorneys, policymakers, regulators, public health representatives, and any person with an interest in alcohol law and policy are encouraged to submit essays.
No relatives of individuals working for the Center for Alcohol Policy, its leadership, or contest judges are eligible to submit entries for this contest. Any interested person working for a government entity must certify their ability to enter and win this contest prior to submitting an essay and comply with appropriate ethics laws.
FORMAT AND CONTENT:
A wide range of essay formats are eligible and encouraged, such as formal law review articles or graduate school essays.
Any form of citation is acceptable, as long as the structure is consistent throughout the piece.
The essay should be submitted double spaced with at least 12-point font in Times New Roman format and should not exceed 25 pages in length, exclusive of endnotes.
Submissions published previously or accepted for publication may be considered – Only if the author has secured consent from the other journal for the Center for Alcohol Policy to post the winning publication on its website with an appropriate note about the other publication.
JUDGING PROCESS:
All submissions will go through an initial screening process. Finalists from this process then will be given to a panel of judges who review the following for each essay:
Analysis of the question and the depth of this analysis;
The readiness of the essay for publication;
Quality of the writing, the originality of the topic, and the analysis used;
The thoroughness of the research and its overall ability to creatively and effectively discuss regulation of the alcohol industry.
Foot Locker Offers ($20,000) No Essay Athletic Scholarships to High School Athletes – Due January 6, 2021
Foot Locker is awarding incoming college freshmen with $20,000 in scholarship funding to pursue a 4-year college degree – not because they scored the most touchdowns or goals, but because sports have helped them grow into strong leaders at school and in their communities.
As a bonus, one of the 20 winners will be chosen for the Ken C. Hicks scholarship to demonstrate superior educational achievement, outstanding leadership, and a genuine love of the game. This winner will receive an additional $5000 award (for a total of $25,000).
This year’s 20 winners will join the program’s nine previous Foot Locker Scholar Athletes classes, which will result in 200 total scholarship recipients since the program’s inception in 2011. Applicants are evaluated based on whether they are Foot Locker Scholar Athlete material. The ideal candidates would be proactive, highly motivated, inspiring, charismatic, honest, trustworthy, genuine, healthy, and courageous. Additionally, promising applicants embody good sportsmanship, strong moral character, are passionate/committed to empowering their community, are confident and enthusiastic leaders, come from diverse backgrounds, and display academic excellence.
Does any of the children in your family attend a Montessori School? Many of our black and brown parents report having never heard of Montessori schools, but they have been around for years. What is now known as Montessori Education was established by a woman named Maria Montessori, whose idea was to create an environment embracing the holistic approach to each child, fostering lifelong explorative and self-paced learning.
The thing is, the Montessori learning/teaching style is nothing new – ALL of the thousands of the children I’ve worked with over the years were born with that philosophy built right in. The problem presents itself when a child does not conform to the request of the parent, teacher, or both; Punishment is likely to happen before the unsuspecting adult has time to help little Sally or Johnny process the why and what will make the attitude or tantrum go away. Almost 100% of the time, children will tell you what happened if they don’t know how they felt about what happened and why.
In my personal experience, there were no Montessori schools in my neighborhood. Still, I can imagine many parents, teachers, and others have been embracing similar teaching styles without adding Lady Maria Montessori’s name to the mix. But, I digress. The desired outcome is to raise conscious and good productive citizens in the world with something to offer someone else. It doesn’t always work out that way, but this Chosen Visionary in the HOT-Seat has made it her life’s work to develop young people worldwide. She shares her story of overcoming barriers to being one of the first black folks to open a Montessori school in Connecticut and the only one in both the Hill and Fair Haven sections of New Haven.

Motivating is the most powerful piece to your drive; without it, you have none (drive). Merely thinking about the people you want to meet, places you want to go, and the things you want to do won’t happen if an action or some kind of movement is not taken. Almost every young person I work with has a dream, something they really want; However, few have a plan or vision for how they will attain it.
In my work at PIMOSH, which is an acronym for People Involved in Motivating Our Students Higher. So, you know how many motivating means to me – It’s our middle name.
This week’s Chosen Visionary in the HOT-Seat is an example of all things motivation fueled by faith and self-determination. From her earliest of days, she didn’t feel challenged by any of her teachers; then finally special People Involved in Motivating Our Students Higher (PIMOSH) showed up and because of the relationships built with positive adults and peers, she has dedicated her life to motivating other Black and Brown students all over the world.

Rev. Dr. Tarin Hampton (Norfolk, VA) has been a University Educator for over 30 years. She earned her Ph.D. in Expository Preaching in 2011 from Faith Evangelical Seminary, Kumasi, Ghana, and her Ed.D is in Educational Leadership, completed in 2002 from Clark Atlanta University. She is a Full Professor at Norfolk State University and the Department Head for the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Exercise Science. She served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, West Africa on a Sabbatical Contract invitation for almost 3 years, and was instrumental in collaboratively establishing the Dance Major in the Department of Music, which is now the Department of Music and Dance. She maintains her connections to UCC as an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Arts as a Dissertation Advisor. She is a two-time recipient of a Fulbright-Hayes Scholarship (2000 – Morocco and Tunisia, and 2008 – Ghana, West Africa). She has participated in and organized numerous Community Service Projects and Educational Conferences throughout her teaching career. She is serving as our Academic Advisor for Life Changes Ministries, Kumasi, Ghana.

Yessir, I can say, ha! I mean it too. But why am I so cocky with this Hot-Seat Chosen Visionary posted article? Because discovering that there is no rush to live is refreshing. Sitting at the Master’s table at Urban Academics has enlightened my understanding of dreams, goals, and timing. Therefore, age has little to nothing to do with those (objectives, goals, and timing). After meeting this week’s Chosen Visionary, I am well able to continue in the path to each dream of dropping off and picking up whatever I am supposed to whenever God wills.
This week’s Chosen Visionary in the HOT-Seat is an example of all things faith. From her earliest years, she has been able to triumph over obstacles that would have destroyed others, having no choice but to give up and quit. Nope; Not this one. She kept going as if driven by a higher power. The source of success, long life, is a direct result of her faith, proving that grace abounds in her life and those around her.
This Week In The HOT-Seat
Lady Opal Lee is from Fort Worth, TX, and she’s the 94-year-old who wants Juneteenth to be a National Holiday. Yes, Juneteenth originated in TX, but 47 states now have it as a state day of observance to commemorate the ending of slavery. More are making it a paid day off, including Virginia, New York, and Texas. Ms. Lee believes Juneteenth can be a unifier because it recognizes that slaves didn’t free themselves. They had help from Quakers along the Underground Railroad; abolitionists were black and white like Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison, soldiers, and many others who gave their lives for the enslaved’s freedom.
How Does She Do It?
I started a walking campaign in Washington, DC, in 2016 and have continued it to bring awareness that there is support for it all across this nation. There is legislation in the Senate S.4019 and in the House H.R.7232 – Juneteenth National Independence Day Act – that needs to be passed into law.
Her vision is gaining traction with the National Football League, Nike, and Target now on board recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth given their employees the day off. Whether that’s all employees or only those who are African American or Black, I’m not sure, but whatever their policy is, it includes Juneteenth! Lady Opal certainly did a great job calling them out. What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is a name based on June 19, 1865, which is the day that enslaved Americans became free (at least that’s what was said). Union General Gordon Granger was excited that the Civil War was over and enslaved African Americans were free; He announced in Galveston, TX, because not everyone got the memo. It was two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
Since June 19, 1866, it’s a day to celebrate our independence; Juneteenth is also considered Black Independence Day, Freedom Day, and Jubilee Days. Today, all but three states recognize Juneteenth; the three who don’t are Hawaii, North Dacota, and South Dakota. Texas, where Lady Opal Lee is from was first to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday.

Ms. Opal Lee, in her spare time (if any), enjoys family gatherings, going to the movies with Aunt Joanne and her daughter Renee. She especially likes reading lots of books; The proud great-grandmother, great-grandmother of eighteen (18), and too many great-great-great-grandchildren to count—a blessing and monument of a heart filled with pure gold. Music is the one universal language everyone can speak – Even without words. It’s the purest form of magic, and its POWER has transcended attitude, mood, apace, and time; Hearing a particular song can bring you back to a specific place and time = Magic! Can you imagine what life would be like without music?
The words song and melody appear in the Bible (combined) between 150 and 200 times, which means Go himself is fascinated with music, more specifically songs. There are all kinds of passages pointing to worship, and there’s not one Church that would dare to start Sunday morning service without the timbrel and dance. We ALL need music, and the spoken word fits nicely inside of it.
What’s magical about the moment we are in is that Christmas’s spirit always seems to rise above what folks are feeling, or at least it looks that way as of Cyber Monday.

Look at the overall consumption of everyday consumers, many of whom are out of work or barely getting by but find ways to shop when they believe there’s a sale or some kind of value proposition. Music, oh yes, the topic of this week’s roundtable segment. So you can make the connection to Music and Magic, I had to help you see numbers you understand. For this example, I will use rap music (we are urban here). Hip-Hop, R&B, and Rap are dominating in the streaming world – Topping every other medium. There’s never been a more profitable time for actual artists in music. For years the BIG money was reserved for writers and music producers, with vocalists glorified worker bees for hire.

In other words, this chosen visionary in the HOT-Seat is a child prodigy who can play any instrument on a dime without any traditional music lessons or schools. He can hear and identify any sound and repeat it, even with his voice. He is a rare breed who can only turn the gift on when prompted by a higher power. 5. P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship ($12,500) – Due December 15, 2020
Established in 1949, the International Peace Scholarship Fund believes that education is fundamental to world peace and understanding. The P.E.O (Philanthropic Educational Organization) funds the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship for selected women from other countries for graduate study in the United States and Canada. Who is eligible to apply for the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship?
An applicant must be qualified for admission to full-time graduate study and working toward a graduate degree in an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada
A student who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada is not eligible
Scholarships are not for online courses, research, internships or for practical training if not combined with coursework
Applicants must have a full year of coursework remaining, be enrolled and in residence for the entire school year
Doctoral students who have completed coursework and are working only on dissertations are not eligible as first-time applicants.
International students attending Cottey College are eligible to apply for a scholarship
How much are these scholarships worth?
The maximum amount awarded for the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship is $12,500.
When are the scholarship applications due?
The last day to submit eligibility forms is December 15, 2020. Applications for students already enrolled in school are due March 1. Those not yet enrolled are due April 1. 6. Robert Derby Scholarship ($2,500) – Due December 15, 2020
With a commitment to higher education, the staff at Robert J. DeBry & Associates have decided to offer an ongoing scholarship to help alleviate the rising costs of education. For the Spring 2021 semester, we have narrowed the scholarship to Utah based Institutions. If you are attending a Utah college and are from out of state, please feel free to apply.

8. Simplr Artificial Intelligence Scholarship ($7,500) – Due December 31, 2020
In order to apply, please write a 1000-2000 word essay on one of the following topics. Make sure to include why you chose your field of study and how it applies to these future technologies.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Blockchain technology – Select the field you’re most passionate about and explore a specific role you think this technology will play in our future, and how this will effect positive change. Describe the key technological aspects as well as the human element that will likely be involved.

10. The Nora Excellence In Art Activism Scholarship – Due December 31, 2020
The #NoRA Excellence in Art Activism Scholarship is a one-time $5,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating High School Senior or a student currently enrolled in a baccalaureate program who uses art to engage in gun violence prevention. Students must present a portfolio of art, music, writing, or other artistic endeavor and a detailed explanation of how it is used to enact social change around gun violence prevention.
Complete the form below including a digital link to your portfolio. Your portfolio should include at least 3 but no more than 10 works of visual art, poetry, short writing, songs, or films. Four research scholarships for graduate students, offering a range of awards for students with strong research plans. The Abel Wolman Fellowship awards $30,000 for an outstanding doctoral student which is renewable for a second year. The LARS Aquatic scholarships award $5,000 to a Master’s student and $7,000 to a Doctoral candidate. The Philip C. Singer scholarship awards $3,000 to an outstanding graduate student.

GE Reagan Scholarship ($10,000) – Due February, 2021
Honoring the legacy and character of our nation’s 40th President, the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program rewards college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship with financial assistance to pursue higher education.
Each year, the Program selects numerous recipients to receive a $10,000 scholarship renewable for up to an additional three years – up to $40,000 total per recipient. Awards are for undergraduate study and may be used for education-related expenses, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, room, and board. In addition, Scholars are invited to participate in a special awards program and receive ongoing leadership-development support.
